Bird Aviary Basics

Facts About LATCH
The LATCH System (or the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) is a safe way to secure a child's car seat or booster seat into your vehicle. LATCH utilizes special straps that will connect to a metal anchor built-into your vehicle. Most modern cars are automatically equipped with the LATCH system. If your car has the LATCH system, then here we will discuss with you how to use it to ensure your child is safe at all times when they are in your vehicle.
Types of LATCH
There are two types of LATCH systems in vehicles: Lower and Tether. Here we will discuss them a little further:
Lower Anchor LATCH – These are small U-shaped metal bars that are hidden under the seats of your vehicle in the backseat.
Tether Anchor LATCH – This is a type of ring that is located behind the rear vehicle seat.
LATCH Straps
With the anchor types, there are also different types of straps that come with your LATCH equipped car seat. Most car seats will have both types of straps so that a parent can use both to double on their child's safety.
Lower Anchor LATCH Straps – This type of strap is made for the lower anchors that are built within a car. Most child car seats will have two straps located on the lower portion of the car seat with small hooks at the end of each strap.
Tether Anchor LATCH Straps – This is a long strap that is located at the top of the car seat and will have an adjustable length and hook to attach to the tether anchor installed in the vehicle.
It is important to note that a tether is never used on its own. These are used in addition to seat belts with your child's car seat. If you use the lower anchors then you do not need to use a seat belt in addition.
LATCH Mistakes
Though LATCH is one of the safest ways to install your child's car seat, it will only work if it is done properly. To ensure that your child is safe, you need to ensure you are installing the car seat properly. Here we list a few common mistakes that are made when it comes to installing a child's car seat with the LATCH system.
- The car seat is not tightened enough upon installation.
- The lower anchor straps are not properly routed beneath the car seat.
- The child's car seat is installed forward facing when it is a rear-facing car seat.
- You install your child's car seat in the center seat, but use the side seat anchors.
- You have used both the lower anchors and the seat belt to secure the seat into place.
- You are using the lower anchor system when your child weighs over 48 pounds.
LATCH is available on a variety of well-known car seat brands such as Britax, Peg Perego, UPPA Baby, Chicco and more. Always ensure that your car is LATCH equipped prior to trying to install a LATCH system and refer to your owner's manual to ensure your car seat is installed properly.
